I hereby officially give up asking Synthesis Magazine to pay me $21. I'm almost embarrassed to admit how small the amount they owe me is, but the fact remains: I was a sucker. I did work for Synthesis and didn't get paid for it.
In case you're thinking about writing for Synthesis, all I can say is, I don't recommend it. I emailed them about doing a few reviews because I liked the look and feel of the magazine, and because getting in on the ground floor when a promising new magazine is starting out has worked well for me before.
I should have realized that when they told me "we don't use contracts" that something was sketchy, but I chalked it up to their being a relatively "new" outfit.
Anyway, I wrote three short reviews for them in December of 2006, and have emailed them probably 5 or 6 times since then, to no avail.
LAME!

i know how that is. skratch magazine owes me somewhere in the vein of $200 for various interviews that appeared in several issues. the sucky part is that all the people i knew left shortly after all the pieces were published. there should probably be some sort of freelance writers union.
