Google Hits: "Worse than X"
NOTE: Have reminded myself this time (unlike on "Better than X" that you need to click through to the last page of results to see the true number of hits.)
Nickelback: 353
Lady Gaga: 250
The Beatles: 124
Green Day: 62
Phish: 46
The Shaggs: 40
Ghoti Hook: 1
This list seems to go roughly in descending order according to contemporary well-known-ness among internet users. Both Nickelback and Lady Gaga are well-known, but both probably have equal numbers of supporters and detractors. Fewer people know who the Shaggs or Ghoti Hook even are, though I suspect both bands are known for being bad*. The important thing when it comes to having bands worse than you is whether a lot of people know who you are in the first place**.
(* I like Ghoti Hook.)
(**One of Google's automatic suggestions when you type "worse than" is "worse than Rebecca Black.")

Google Hits: "Better than X"
the Beatles: 866,000
the Kinks: 312,000
the Rolling Stones: 220,000
the White Stripes: 183,000
the Shaggs: 2,600
the Mighty Mighty Bosstones: 1,140
I'm not sure what this proves, since objectively speaking there are probably many more bands or things better than the Shaggs than there are those that are better than the Beatles. There must be some kind of over/under, like you have to be famous enough for people to use you in a sentence that states that something is better than you.
