I admit that I really haven't paid much attention to Of Montreal -- like, ever -- because I saw them as one of those obnoxiously weird-for-weird's sake bands with nonsense lyrics, but I have been really surprised by their recent output -- Hissing Fauna, Are You the Destroyer? and the new EP Icons, Abstract Thee (recorded at the same time) are just so honest and sad, even though they're almost disco records. "Miss Blonde Your Papa is Failing," a song for the singer's infant daughter about her parents' impending divorce, is such a heartbreak. After these recordings, apparently the husband and wife reunited (in real life), but these songs capture what must have been an incredibly painful time in the life of one family.

Of Montreal: Icons, Abstract Thee
